Darth Maul to Return Spring 2012 – UPDATED

EW.com posted an exclusive video today showing, but not really showing, Darth Maul in The Clone Wars.  The video is mostly clips from his appearance in The Phantom Menace, but at the end of the video there are some quick flashes of his face.  Not really much more than we saw in the tease we got toward the end of season 3.

The EW.com article also has some really good quotes from Dave Filoni.

“I thought George was definitively saying to the fans, ‘There’s no way this character is coming back. This is not a Boba Fett/Sarlacc Pit situation where, because of fan love, Boba gets out of that thing any number of ways.’ Fast-forward ten-years, and I’m the one to bring Maul back.”

“First of all, how does he survive getting cut in half? Plus he fell! And also, don’t forget Obi-Wan Kenobi is still around so I’m sure Maul wouldn’t be very happy with him.”

“He’s suffered through a lot to keep himself alive and implemented the training of his master to keep himself alive.”

“He’s more than ten years older than he was in The Phantom Menace. That’s immensely satisfying, because now nobody knows what’s going to happen to him. I know, but nobody else does.”

I am looking forward to seeing how they handle a Darth Maul resurrection.  I just really hope it’s not the mech legs like in Star Wars Visionaries.

UPDATE: A new image at usatoday.com shows The Clone Wars version of Darth Maul in more detail.  He seems to be rockin’ the shirtless look now and his lightsaber looks more standard than his double bladed one from The Phantom Menace.  Still can’t see his legs…

  1. I am waiting to see Maul hovering (as a Dark Jedi named Maw did in Dark Forces: Jedi Knight) using a Repulsor-lift in place of his legs. Though not my ideal for this situation, I find it easier to stomach in light of the Mech Maul story mentioned.

  2. Hmm, yes, still no legs….. I’m not sure I like the idea of mech or repulsor- lift. Does anyone think that he’s some sort of force ghost? Though I doubt that too, considering what Dave Filoni said.

    1. judging by this quote I don’t think it will be a Force ghost.

  3. They have a massively blown up version of the image on SW.com right now. If you look at his left lat (back) area there looks to be some kind of burn/scar in the black tattoo. Check it out. http://www.starwars.com/
