In regards to the inconsistency between this story and Yoda’s comment about the dark side consuming someone forever, I think that this can be resolved by inferring that Yoda was addressing Luke specifically as opposed to just anyone since Luke is not a Jedi yet whereas Quinlan has had more experience as a Jedi.
