Clone Wars Trailer Speculation: Darth Maul

Speculation on the final three episodes of The Clone Wars Season 4

A few days ago we were treated to a trailer for the 4-part season finale of The Clone Wars.  As we have known for a while, Darth Maul will be returning in the last two episodes of the season, and the trailer gives us some great images from those episodes.  Let’s take a closer look at some of the images from the trailer and do some speculating.  As a bonus we will also look at some images from the preview clip of the next episode called “Bounty” featuring Boba Fett!

This post will be discussing things revealed from the book The Wrath of Darth Maul as well as the latest The Clone Wars episode “Massacre”.  If you are sensitive to spoilers you may not want to read further.

So if you want to know exactly how Darth Maul survived and his current state before The Clone Wars episodes are released, read the last two chapters and epilogue of the young readers novel The Wrath of Darth Maul.  In this book it tells how Savage Opress finds a crazed Maul on the planet Lotho Minor.  Savage first confronts and fights Maul and then helps him recover his memory.  Maul is described as having six, mechanical, spider-like legs.  Judging by the episode description and the clips from the trailer it looks like the upcoming episode “Brothers” will be be covering this part of the story.  Here is the episode description:

After being used as a weapon of vengeance by Count Dooku and Asajj Ventress, the dark warrior Savage Opress embarked on a galaxy-spanning quest to find his long-lost brother, the legendary Darth Maul. Maul lives in the depths of a ruined world as a shattered madman barely held together by dreams of vengeance. Savage conspires with the scheming witch Mother Talzin to heal Darth Maul’s body and mind, so that the brothers can begin a new crusade of vengeance against the Jedi.

My guess is that this first image is Savage fighting off some of the locals on Lotho Minor before he finds Maul.

.

In the trailer they never clearly show Maul with his spider-like legs but we do get a couple shots of him skittering by in the shadows.  Here is an image where you can see one of his legs.  It’s hard to tell but it looks like it is made up of twisted cord rather than solid metal.

.

Here is an image from the confrontation between Maul and Savage in the cave.  You can see that Maul’s horns have grown out to look almost like antlers and that a couple in the front have been broken off.  The antler style of horns matches the way they look in his appearance in the Visionaries comic story “Old Wounds.”

.

You can see in this shot that his horns eventually get filed down to a manageable length.

.

Based on the episode description it seems as if Mother Talzin will have something to do with getting Maul fixed up with his new legs.  This will likely mean replacing his cobbled together spider legs with the more practical, bipedal, metal legs we see in the trailer.  In this image Maul is on an unknown planet that looks a lot like The Force Unleashed‘s version of Felucia.  There is a group of unlucky people in his path (are they children?).  He is using what looks like half of his damaged lightsaber we know from The Phantom Menace.  If this is the same lightsaber, how did he get it back?  Will we not see Maul with the double-bladed version at all?

.

What would a good Darth Maul resurrection story be without a confrontation with Obi-Wan Kenobi?  In the trailer we see Maul’s metal foot stomp down and Kenobi standing off in the distance.  It looks like they also kept the design from the Visionaries story and gave him clawed feet.

.

We can do this for old times’ sake.  But I was a Padawan then… now… you won’t heal clean! – Obi-Wan Kenobi from “Old Wounds”

And it looks like not only does Obi-Wan have to face Maul but also Savage Opress!

.

Savage Opress and Ventress will have a face-off as well.

.

Then we get the most revealing image of The Clone Wars version of Maul yet.  Mechanical legs and all.

.

Looks like they pretty much stuck to the design from the Visionaries comic, right down to the collar thing and arm gauntlets.

.

Now let’s move onto some images from the upcoming episode “Bounty”.  The Nightsisters have been all but wiped out by General Grievous and Count Dooku.  Ventress is now on the run and is looking to join up with a group of bounty hunters with some very familiar faces.  With the preview clip and images from this episode, some really cool stuff has already been revealed.

Looks like Embo has a pet anooba.

.

We get our first look at The Clone Wars’ version of Dengar!

.

Boba Fett has a new helmet, but it’s not the one we are used to.  He is heading up a team which includes Bossk.

.

Asajj Ventress doesn’t seem too impressed with Fett, even with his new haircut.

.

We also get to see Boba Fett in action with his new helmet and what looks like his father Jango’s pistols.

.

I cannot wait to see these last three episodes of Season 4.  This show just keeps getting better!

The Clone Wars Season 4 Episode 15 Review

Hello and welcome back to another review of Star Wars: The Clone Wars here on the Star Wars Report! This week, Obi-Wan dies in order to infiltrate a group of terrorists aiming to kidnap the chancellor in Deception! This is the first episode in our second to last four part arc in season four; I can’t believe we’re getting so close to the end of the season!

Jumping right into the big topic of the episode, Deception focused primarily on Obi Wan’s faked death, and facial reconstruction to take the appearance of the very cool looking bounty hunter Rako Hardeen. Immediately we are thrown into a very different kind of Clone Wars episode, for better or worse. The entire opening concept of faking Obi Wan’s death reminded me of an old James Bond film (Diamonds Are Forever, I think), and going undercover certainly built upon the spy/undercover agent style of the episode. Though I will say this episode was much more exciting and suspenseful than some of our other espionage geared episodes (mostly from season 3), I’m not too sure how I felt about how they went about infiltrating Moralo Eval’s plan, the facial transformation and voice emulator seemed a little too far-fetched. The technology, for whatever reason, just felt like it did not fit in the Star Wars universe. All complaints aside, I did enjoy Obi-Wan’s portrayal of an evil bounty hunter, which I think makes the cringe worthy facial reconstruction technology worth it. I think there are many pros to creating a brand new bounty hunter character to go undercover for the Jedi, but I don’t think we would have would react the same way to his “tough guy” actions as we would to a Jedi Knight, especially Obi-Wan. His personality transformation was so believable, someone could’ve easily forgotten he was Obi-Wan and thought he was the actual Rako Hardeen!

Another strong point of the episode was the perspective we have looking through the eyes of the bad guys. I know we’ve had episodes focused on characters such as Cad Bane, but the addition of our ability to relate to Obi-Wan throws us right into the den of thieves in such a different way than seen before. We aren’t shown the whole plan because we aren’t seeing these events unfold from Bane’s perspective, or Eval’s, we’re seeing it through Obi-Wan who knows just as much as we do. The writers depicted that feeling of suspense and unpredictability very well, and with some of our favorite villains popping up everywhere! Characters such as Boba Fett, Cad Bane, and Bossk really helped make this episode better.

All in all, this episode was good, though not great by any means. This is one of the strangest episodes I think we’ve seen all season (not counting comedic episodes). I did enjoy all the small details and characters that we don’t normally see (Like hearing Obi-Wan addressed as Ben for the first time in the series!). I think the concept is flawed, but the results and how it all played out was very well done, and I can’t wait for more! That wraps up my review for this episode! We want to know what you thought of Deception, leave a comment below! Thanks for reading and may the Force be with you… always!

Still Waters Run Deep – SWR #29

Welcome back to the Star Wars Report!

Where to begin, where to begin……

Ok, so Riley, Mark, and Bethany (especially Riley) rant about liking and not liking Star Wars. About haters and fans, ‘true fans’ and disagreements. You’ll just have to listen. =)

We also had Chris of the Sarlacc Pit podcast join us to talk a bit about his show, and discuss the latest in The Clone Wars!

Thank you Toy Hutt for sponsoring this craziness!

Daniel Logan saved a six-year-old girl from drowning! I don’t know how it’s possible, but Mr. Fett just went up several notches on the cool scale.

Enjoy!!

The Clone Wars Season 4: What’s Coming Up?

What Else Can We Expect from Season 4 of The Clone Wars?

We have gotten three episodes about fish species fighting each other, one about Gungans, two Droids episodes and we are in the midst of an awesome clone-centric 4-parter.  This Friday’s episode will be the tenth of the season.  With 12 episodes left after that, what can we expect from the rest of the season?  Let’s take a look at some images that have been revealed to us in trailers and see if we can shed some light on what is left in Season 4.

Slaves of the Republic
Directly following the Umbara story arc, there will be a three episode story arc with episodes titled “Slaves of the Republic”, “Kidnapped” and “Escape from Kadavo”.  This story arc is to be based on the Dark Horse comic story Slaves of the Republic.  Many of the images we have seen in the trailers seem to come from this story arc.  In many ways, it seems like they have stayed true to the comic with some of the images from the show looking like they were lifted straight from the comic.

This image of Ahsoka and the others looks like it is right out of the comic book.

The basic premise of the comic story is that some Togruta have been kidnapped and sold into slavery, and Anakin, Obi-wan, Ahsoka, and Rex go to try and free them.  It will be nice to see the “Big 4” back together again.  In fact, it will be nice to see Obi-Wan actually do something this season since he has been nearly non-existent in the first nine episodes.  It will also be interesting to see how close they stay to the comic storyline.  Based on the images we have seen, they have already decided to drastically change the appearance of the Zygerrians from the comic.  In the comic they have long red hair, but in the show it seems to have been switched out for cat or bat-like ears.

Presumably a Zygerrian leader.

SPOILER ALERT: The inclusion of what looks to be Rex in some of the images would indicate that he does indeed survive the events on Umbara.

More speeder bike action.

Deathwatch
Ever since their appearance in Season Two we have all wondered when we would see Deathwatch again.  This season promises to show their return.  Based on this image it looks like we are going to see Pre Vizsla again and he has gotten some cool upgrades to his helmet.

He must get great reception.

You may also notice Lux Bonteri in the above picture.  Lux is a character who was introduced in Season 3 as the son of a Separatist and a possible love interest for Ahsoka.  Based on a preview clip that was shown before the season even started, we will see Lux traveling with Ahsoka and an encounter with Deathwatch on a snowy planet.  It will be interesting to see how Lux reacts to the Deathwatch.  He is a troubled boy/man because he believes both of his parents were killed by the Republic.  Will he join Deathwatch?  Is he secretly already a member?  We can also look forward to seeing the female Deathwatch character, Bo-Katan, voiced by Katee Sackhoff.

Deathwatch picks really pretty planets to hang out on.

Looks like they captured Artoo too.

Cad Bane and Bossk
Since they are both members of species who have a lot of similar looking members, we cannot be 100% sure, but these sure look like images of a couple of our favorite bounty hunters staging a prison break.  The last time we saw Cad Bane he was escaping capture by Obi-Wan and Quinlan Vos.  How did he get stuck in prison?  Is he there just to break Bossk out?  Is Boba Fett still in prison too?

All Duros look the same.

Bossk knocking out some guards

Asajj Ventress on Dathomir
Another thing we know is coming up this season is the return of Asajj Ventress.  Based on the images it looks like she is back on Dathomir leading some nightsisters against General Grievous and his droids.

Ventress facing off against some commando droids.

The ultimate showdown!

Darth Maul and Savage Opress
We have been promised Maul sometime in Season 4.  We have even been shown an image of him, but it is still being speculated what form he will be in.  Most believe we will indeed get Maul in a physical form in The Clone Wars.  What we don’t know is if he is going to be whole.  Mech legs or not it will be cool to see the silent assassin from The Phanton Menace back.  And what about his brother?  Because we are getting Maul does that automatically mean we are getting Savage Opress this season too?  Let’s hope so.

Random
Here are a couple more images.  Not sure exactly where they fit into the remaining stories in the season.

Who is this clone?

Some Wolfpack members using jet packs. Awesome.

And one last thing I noticed.  In the season 4 trailer that was shown before the season started, there is a quick sequence where Commander Cody is showing a hologram to what looks like a Jedi.  Anakin approaches them and uses the Force to pull the hologram out of Cody’s hand and destroys it in anger.  It happens so fast in the trailer you might have missed it.  In this first image it is hard to make out what the hologram is showing.

.

As the hologram is being pulled away it becomes clearer for just a second.  It shows what looks like a Zabrak male.  Is that Darth Maul?  Savage Oppress?  Eeth Koth?  Is it even a Zabrak?  Am I just seeing what I want to see?

.

And then Anakin destroys it.  Whatever it was, Anakin did not like it very much.  Time will reveal all.  Or at least all that Filoni wants it to reveal.

.

What do you want to see in the rest of Season 4?  Let us know in the comments below.
