Fangirls Around the Web: April 2015

Happy Star Wars Day! The latest Fangirls Around the Web continues to shine a spotlight on female fans and their contributions to the Star Wars community.

First, happy belated birthday to Star Wars fangirl Bethany Blanton! She celebrated her birthday during Star Wars Celebration, and by browsing through her Instagram, it looks like she had a fantastic time!

Every last Friday of the month, transmedia author and scholar Natacha Guyot discusses all things science fiction with various talented women in a monthly feature called #SciFi Women Interviews. She kicked off the series with (me!) Star Wars fangirl Johnamarie Macias, and in April, Natacha interviewed science fiction writer and poet Yolanda I. Washington.

Congratulations to journalist Megan Crouse! She joined the Suvudu and Del Rey family as the new writer of the Holonet Digest series. You can read her roundups of Star Wars news over at Suvudu.com.

Also, congratulations to Mariel Mohns for winning the #StyleYourUniverse contest using Her Universe Star Wars attire. Find a brief interview of her over at GeekFashionWeek.net.

Fans from around the world came together last month at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim. Here’s a rundown of fangirl highlights from the convention:

Fangirls, add this to your future shopping lists! Hasbro revealed The Black Series Ahsoka Tano 6-inch action figure at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim. The figure is expected to arrive in 2016.

Scott Murray wrote about the fangirl presence at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim over at Coffee With Kenobi in a piece called, “The Fangirl Impact on Star Wars Celebration“.

April was also a big month for FANgirl Blog’s Tricia Barr. She revamped her personal site over at TriciaBarr.com. At Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, Tricia moderated a panel with a variety of Star Wars fans, known as From a Certain Point of View: A Diversity of Opinions in Star Wars. Tricia is also the co-author of the latest reference book, Ultimate Star Wars, and she will be on a book tour around the country. Check out the DK tour schedule over at FANgirl Blog for additional details.

FANgirl Blog is also a fantastic source of the latest fangirl news in the Star Wars community. Check out April’s Daisy Ridley Roundup to learn more about The Force Awakens actress and her character as well as last month’s Fangirls Around the Web to read up on female fan spotlights.

Women in Star Wars

Women in Star Wars Around the Web

What promises to be a fantastic year in Star Wars fandom is off to great start in January and the women of Star Wars have already been getting the party started.

Over on the official site Amy Ratcliffe gave a great intro to the 7 Topics Star Wars Fans Love to Debate. Meanwhile host of Rebels Recon and social media correspondent for starwars.com, Andi Gutierrez, has started a new feature on the site called Social Scanner. It’s a peek into her favorite social media posts throughout the week with a new edition posting every Friday. It’s a great way to feature fans.

The cover was revealed for the upcoming Ultimate Star Wars – a guide to characters, creatures, locations, technology, and vehicles of the Star Wars universe. This book comes out in May and was written by Fangirls Going Rogue Host Tricia Barr as well as Adam Bray, Ryder Windham, and Dan Wallace.

Dragon Con 2014: A New Trope Panel Recap

This year saw me, Teresa, Riley, and Aaron all together at Dragon Con! While the convention is over, we are still releasing coverage of it including audio, photos, event coverage, and panel recaps like this one. Dragon Con has so much wonderful content from Marvel panels to parties, from Doctor Who to My Little Pony, and of course the Star Wars track, which had panels, parties, a costume contest, a trivia contest, and more. This Saturday panel was moderated by Teresa Delgado and Aaron Goins, who also have some audio of the panel on their podcast Star Wars Bookworms. The guests were Christie Golden and Timothy Zahn, both well know authors. The discussion revolved around tropes, with the authors talking about overdone story-lines in fiction, as well as classic themes that aid in the effort of telling a story well.

Christmas in the Stars – Away in a Taun Taun

The the “Christmas in the Stars.” collaboration continues! I’m so glad to be working with so many good friends from around the Star Wars fan-site community. Over the next few days there will be a short, daily guest blog post about a favorite Star Wars memory from a friend of us here at the Star Wars Report. We continue with “Away in a Taun Taun” a story from our own Teresa Delgado of Fangirl Next Door.

Enjoy!

—————————————————————————————————————————–

Star Wars and Christmas, there is nothing else that comes more naturally for me than those two things. I have not always been the Fangirl I am today and while I liked Star Wars there was a time when I did not collect it and my toys of choice were not Star Wars related (BLASPHEMY I know!)

I really began collecting Star Wars figures when the Unleashed line was coming out (2008) as well as Galactic Heroes (at that time they were made by Playskool). Soon after that I started collecting all sorts of things and books became a huge staple of my collection.

Christmas 2010 was a magical Christmas for me. I received two of the coolest things I have ever been given and they remain to this day staples in my collection. These 2 items were things I had seen but had never even bothered to ask anyone for. I vaguely remember showing them to people online but never thought in a million years I would get them. Keep in mind that in 2010 I was 25 years old and the excitement that came out of me on that Christmas day was something I had not experienced since I was a 2-3 years old and got my Care Bear pajamas and Teddy Ruxpin.

The first of the two was a HUGE BOX and when I opened it all I saw was this big squishy mass of grey. As I pulled it out I realized that it was in fact….the Taun Taun sleeping bag. I immediately had to take it out of it’s plastic un-zip it and smell inside to make sure it did not smell and then climb in it. I wish I had pictures of that moment. The next moment was when I opened another box and inside was the collector’s editon of The Jedi Path. That moment might have been an even bigger moment than the Taun Taun. I opened it up, took off all the plastic and pushed the button…the lights turned on the sound effects played and up rose the book out of its vault. It was an unreal experience. The Jedi Path remains one of my all time favorite books and that vault was the coolest way to present this book nerd with a book ever.

It was after that Christmas that my book collecting took off and now I am 28 almost 29 and books are something I ask for every Christmas, including this year. Christmas is such a wonderful time for Star Wars, I could go on and on but I have one more thing that is tradition for me with Star Wars and I will stop. I now have an all Star Wars Christmas tree. It is black with multi colored lights and it is where I hang all my Hallmark Star Wars ornaments, this way they don’t have to fight for a spot on the big tree.

Merry Christmas everyone I hope your holidays are filled with Star Wars Magic.
