Celebration Recap and Interviews – SWBW #41

bookworms Banner

Now that some time has passed and we are down from our Celebration high, it’s time to think back on all the good times.

  • Celebration was packed with awesome Star Wars events, celebrity sightings, and hanging out with all our favorite people. We take some time to recap our Celebration Anaheim experience.
  • We also got some great author interviews while we were there. Our first one was with Christie Golden who talked about her reaction to the new The Force Awakens trailer, creating a new species, and writing Vos and Ventress in Dark Disciple.
  • Next we talked to John Jackson Miller about writing a Rebels novel, his take on Hera and Kanan, and why he gave a certain character such a cruel fate in Kenobi.
  • Our last Celebration interview was with James Luceno. He talked about creating Tarkin’s backstory with the Story Group, writing dark side characters, and his take on new canon and Legends.
  • After we got back from Celebration we caught up with writer and artist Jeffrey Brown to talk about his books including the just released Darth Vader and Friends.

Is it Celebration London yet?

Review: Ezra’s Gamble by Ryder Windham

Review: Ezra’s Gamble by Ryder Windham (or, The Bossk Show feat. Ezra Bridger)

Ezra’s Gamble by Ryder Windham sees the very first appearance of one of our new characters, Ezra Bridger, from Star Wars: Rebels. As such, I went into the reading of this book thinking it would be a sort of coming-of-age story. One where we see a young(er, for this book takes place just before the video short Property of Ezra Bridger. We even get to see that clip in the book) Ezra get his first taste of danger, which sets him on the path to wanting to be a rebel. Instead, we don’t get that in this book. Which makes sense, I realized much later (I’m a little slow on the uptake, you may gather), because that’s what the TV show is for. With all that in mind, it makes for an odd introduction, so it’s best to not think of it as that. It is, at its heart, an adventure story. Also it has Bossk, the famed bounty hunter from The Empire Strikes Back. So there’s that.

“Dying is Never a Plan” (an X-wing Miniatures Game Scenario by John Jackson Miller and Nathan P. Butler)

Our own Nathan P. Butler joins with John Jackson Miller to create a custom X-wing scenario!

Every once in a while, opportunity knocks to do something unexpected and just plain fun. Just such an opportunity came to Nathan P. Butler of Star Wars Beyond the Films and The Star Wars Report’s Rebels Roundtable back in early September. On the suggestion of fellow Star Wars fan (and Fantasy Flight Games writer) Keith Kappel, prolific Star Wars author John Jackson Miller reached out to Nathan with an idea in mind. He wanted to create a special, unofficial X-wing Miniatures Game scenario that would recreate much of the atmosphere of a space chase over Cynda in his recently-released novel A New Dawn.

ANewDawn

After a quick-but-intense session of brainstorming, the scenario’s general concept was determined, and Nathan put together the scenario. After a few tweaks from John, it was ready for play. The scenario, Dying is Never a Plan, debuted at Galaxy Comics & Games in Stevens Point, Wisconsin on October 18, 2014, unintentionally making it a nice way for Nathan to celebrate his birthday and the 17th anniversary of his Star Wars Timeline Project that both arrived a day earlier.

Now that the scenario has been played in public, we wanted to share it with you, our readers and listeners, so that you can give it a try the next time you are in the mood for a “mission” style game of X-wing to break up the usual straight-up dogfighting.

We hope you enjoy it.

More Dragon Con coverage from Star Wars Bookworms!

Last episode Aaron and Teresa gave a recap of their experiences at Dragon Con 2014 and shared the audio from the first panel they moderated featuring authors Timothy Zahn and Christie Golden. This episode our hosts talk about their time preparing for and moderating the second Star Wars author panel about canon and Legends.

This panel featured Zahn and Golden again as well as notable Star Wars authors Kevin Anderson, Rebecca Moesta, Michael Stackpole, and Dave Wolverton. The authors talked about what the Legends label means to them, weaving continuities together, the future of Star Wars, and so much more!

And don’t forget. This month we are reading John Jackson Miller’s new Rebels novel, A New Dawn, over at our Goodreads book club. If you haven’t joined us yet, now is the perfect time. A New Dawn is the first novel in the new canon and is a great jumping on point into Star Wars literature. Also, John Jackson Miller himself has joined the book club and is contributing to the conversation over at Goodreads.
