Star Wars Reads Day: The Empire Invades!

Greetings Bothans! What follows is a post about some adventures had at this past weekend’s Star Wars Reads Day! Many of you will already be familiar with Paul DePaola who writes for a number of Star Wars fan sites and is also a podcaster, but be sure to check out his geek site Fanboys Talking! With that, I’ll let Paul take it away! ~ Bethany Blanton

The third annual Star Wars Reads event was held on Saturday, October 12th.  Troopers from all over the Empire showed up at their local book stores and libraries to celebrate literacy and reading.  I attended the event as a member of the 501st Legion, “trooping” my local Barnes & Noble as a Sandtrooper.

Greetings Bothans!

What follows is a set of short reviews of Star Wars books from Mitchell Stein over at MickeyMindset.com! He prepped these in preparation of the upcoming Star Wars Reads Day.

With that, I’ll turn it over to Mitchell! ~ Bethany

Mitchell Stein- Greetings Star Wars fans! In honor of Star Wars Reads Day this weekend, I am reviewing three awesome new books from Disney/Lucasfilm and DK Publishing! Today I am taking a look at Star Wars Rebels: The Visual GuideStar Wars Blueprintsand Star Wars: The Ultimate Visual Guide: Updated and Expanded. All of these books follow in DK’s line of encyclopedias, which also includes other franchises such as Disney, Pixar, Muppets, Lego, Doctor Who, and a whole lot more! Be sure to check out some of DK’s other Star Wars books as well.

Without any further ado, let’s cut to the review shall we?

Star Wars Rebels: The Visual Guide

SWRebels

Based off the Star Wars Rebels television show on Disney XD, this guide gives a look at every character and location based in the series with a break-down analysis of pretty much every object and weapon that’s included in the show. I’ve given this book a re-read after watching the premiere episode of Rebels, and I find myself appreciating this book far more than before I viewed the episode. It also includes some behind-the-scenes look at how the series is made from story-boards to animation and an introduction by series creator Dave Filoni. It’s a must have for any Star Wars Rebels fans.

Star Wars Blueprints

BLUEP1

There’s a whole bunch of books in this series, but the book I am specifically talking about features Darth Vader on it’s cover, and to be honest isn’t actually much of a book. Inside this box of Darth Vader, it includes five awesome posters of blueprints on the creation of the characters and vehicles including R2-D2 and C3PO, the Death Star, Darth Vader, The Millennium Falcon, and various other weapons and vehicles. I probably would have preferred an actual book with photos of blue-prints, but this one is pretty cool too. I would definitely suggest checking this one out as well.

Star Wars: The Ultimate Visual Guide: Updated and Expanded

Star Wars Ultimate Guide

This is by far the largest and most in-depth book on the Star Wars franchise. The book is split into two parts, the original classic trilogy and the prequels and everything is categorized alphabetically and by it’s significance in story. It breaks down every subject in every possible way with multiple photos, break-down analysis and quotes which makes it one of my favorite Star Wars books to date!

Be sure to check out these books and more this weekend during Star Wars Reads! There is no try, only read!

Joe Schreiber Lockdown – SWBW #14

Play

Star Wars Reads Day was this past Saturday and I attended the event in Lancaster, PA. The event was a ton of fun and I would recommend it to all Star Wars fans, especially if you have kids. One of the highlights was the attendance of Star Wars author Joe Schreiber. He is the author of the novels Death Troopers and Red Harvest, but the novel I was excited to hear about was his upcoming Maul: Lockdown.

As Schreiber began to do a reading from the book I decided to turn on my phone’s voice recorder to see if I could catch some good audio for the show. I’m glad I did. The reading from Lockdown ended up being a battle between Darth Maul and a Yuuzhan Vong! Schreiber also had some very interesting things to say about the story and development of the book.

Kenobi (novel)

Anyone who listens to Star Wars podcasts is probably familiar with our guest for this episode. We were happy to welcome Jimmy Mac from the podcast RebelForce Radio! Of course since we had him we had to get his take on the Star Wars Expanded Universe. He talked about how he got into the EU while it was still in its infancy, some of the early things he was into, and his dislike for the Black Fleet Crisis. We also discussed what his thoughts are on the Expanded Universe in relation to the new movies coming out.

“Star Wars Reads Day is the perfect way to celebrate with our Star Wars fans” says Carol Roeder, Director of Publishing at Lucasfilm. “Our publishing program has always been an essential component of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, as there are so many more stories to tell than what we experience in the films, TV series, and games.  We at Lucasfilm are proud to be a part of initiatives like Star Wars Reads Day and hope that it will encourage more young people to read.”

There are currently over 120 million Star Wars books in print and more than 110 Star Wars titles have been New York Times bestsellers.
